Here is how it works:

Order or bid for items as normally at the listed price. All items will be shipped on payment as soon as possible after 1st January. (We are closing for about a week after Christmas for a stock check (and I hope a rest!) and won't dispatch in that week.)
Please pay as usual by paypal and when we see your payment we will refund by paypal at least 20% of the selling price (not including postage).

The refund will be

Items selling for less than £5.00 - refund £1.00
Items selling for £5 to less than £10 - refund £2.00
Items selling for £10 to less than £15 - refund £3.00
and so on up!

Work it out -that's at least 20%. For small items we know we may be paying you to buy them but then it's Christmas!

For cheque and postal order payments (on orders placed by 31 December) please deduct the correct discount yourself from your payment befor posting it, as we cannot refund the discount by post.

We anticipate a lot of interest as people 'cash in' their Chritmas cheques and postal orders and a big demand so it is just possible we may sell out of some items. It may be wise to order as soon as possible, as it will be first come first serve if that happens. However rest assured all items are included, both store items and ebay auctions.

Are fairies real?

The summer before last I was walking in the locally named 'Fairy Glen' near Fortrose in the Black Isle, north of Inverness, Scotland, a place no stranger to magic. It was dusk. For the space of a few seconds I saw near a tree branch a few feet away what I recognised to be a fairy. It was perhaps four inches tall with glistening wings. It hovered stationary for a while then fluttered away and the instictive recogition faded. The scientific mind clicked in. That told me that creatures such as these, the natives call fairies, were what we call bats. So it was 'only' a bat, and I was disappointed. It looked like a fairy. What is the best name for it, bat or fairy, and which should I choose?

One of the things about a Hippo blog and Hippo website is you can't get away from them.
I mean of course hippos.

On our ebay site we have the odd 'mad hippo' auction to make life interesting. The items start at 0.01p (GBP) plus reasonably modest postage. This ensures a few bids (or more sometimes) but often it's a bargain. Mad really, makes no money, but I like it.

Bouncy balls. Are you aware that novelty bouncy balls are the new kid's craze these days. The sort that have figures, like aliens, planes or animals inside which can be seen through the clear plastic. They have all the classic features of a classic toy. They come in many different colours and types of figure, take jets, which can have ten or so collectable designs that can be saved and swapped to make sets. They are great fun, the dense rubber making them bounce incredibly high, higher than expected. Best of all for the shops they are easily lost when they bounce behind the petunias, so there is a constant demand for replacements. I feel they are great because being quite small they can be shipped worldwide without breaking the bank in postal charges.

The ones we stock at Hippo Gifts are varied, including for example aliens, evil eyes that glow in the dark, airplanes, dolphins, penguins, soccer balls/players, polar animals like whales, dinosaurs, flies, crabs, octopi, snakes and sea creatures.A young member of my family is particularly keen on one particular ball, with a red alien inside, that she bounces round the garden. It can keep her occupied for days.

I love all sorts of ethnic items. The nice thing about ebay is that you get an idea of interest by people who are 'watching' as well as buying. The item of Ganesh is showing most interest, and I have sold quite a few. Itis a statue of Ganesh, the Hindu elephant god. Does anyone of Hindu persuasion know why? Is a festival coming up?

The obelisk, called TEJEN in the sacred language of the ancient Egyptians, was a term which was synonymous with "protection" or "defense." The needle of stone had the function of perforating the clouds and dispersing negative forces that always threaten to accumulate, in the form of visible storms or invisible ones, and was placed over the temple as a symbol of a petrified ray. The word "Obelisk" comes from the Greek obeliskos, meaning a prong for roasting. It is a stone that is frequently monolithic, of a quadrangular base, placed upright and ending with a pointed top.

Welcome to my new blog from hippogifts.net. Sorry to start on a downer but I just learned by hippo logo is about to go exitict. It is no longer available at my wholesale suppliers, apart from the five I just ordered. If you want one get one of the last now from www.hippogifts.net. If you know another supplier let me know. This crisis must be averted, if my logo isn't to become an abstract hippo, an aesthetic but non-concrete hippo, an ex-hippo, well a dead hippo, you get the meaning.

It's really a money box and I do have one stuck on my monitor in researve - picture to follow if I get my camera back from my daughter.
